Museum Collection

The Winding House is an accredited museum which holds a collection of over 14,000 objects. We collect and preserve objects with strong links to the history of Caerphilly County Borough; its places and people. The collection includes objects, documents & photographs relating to the social & domestic history, as well as industrial history. When the Winding House opened in 2008 there were 1,500 items on the catalogue but thanks to generous donations by the people of Caerphilly County Borough and beyond, this has grown into the fascinating collection we hold today.

We are lucky to be able to display a small amount of this collection to the public, which you can view in our West Gallery or in one of our Outreach Exhibits in local libraries throughout Caerphilly County Borough. We regularly update these exhibits, to bring the history of South Wales to communities throughout the borough.

Most of our collection is kept behind closed doors, where we can safely preserve it for future generations. But all our objects are available to the public for research and education purposes. So if you’re doing a family history, academic or educational project, get in touch to access objects not on display to the public.

Or use our online catalogue to virtually explore some of our collection.
